Yes, they are neat. We have what looks like three breeding pairs plus this year's offspring hanging around. They'll all fly south around October.

It's really funny when there's a wasp on the feeder; all the birds will hang around and gripe, and the wasp will wave at them. Sort of like cats when a possum shows up at the food bowl!

Wasps are a lot smarter than most of us think.

Considering their size, they do a darn good job of navigating, recognizing what is, and isn't a threat or a food source, and reacting to their needs with enviable speed.

I wouldn't advise playing with them, but I have heard tales of wasps giving a clear unspoken message to human interlopers that was the equivalent of, "Okay, I've sized you up, and I know what you are about, now leave me alone to tend to my affairs!"

Military "smart bomb" designers could only wish to have such hardware capabilities!
