Economics. It was either that or raise the price. It already costs and arm and a leg compared to others. Problem is none of the others have quite the same taste or buzz. When I'm not "on the scotch" I drink R&R (Rich and Rare). Has a similiar taste for a lot less dinero.
From my observations, most of the JD drinkers mix it in coke, as in Jack an Coke. Hell iffin you gotta drown it in soda, you might as well order the bar brand. 90% of the Jack and Coke drinkers wouldn't know the difference.
Years ago I came home from work (bedspring factory 2nd shift while attending college) to find my wife and her friend drinking my Johnny Walker Black with coke. I confiscated the bottle and kept it locked up after that.

Most manufacturers have removed a cup from their "half gallons" of ice cream and just try to find a 33-gallon trash bag that hasn't been downsized to 30.
Meanwhile, the fries at McDonald's and the basic unit of Coca-Cola keeps getting bigger.
