For a GenExer like me, it's impossible to fathom the sacrifices of America's Greatest Generation. (Mine is a generation that, in significant part, were born during Vietnam, in high school for Desert Storm and fast approaching age 30 on September 11th. No one stopped us from volunteering, of course, but GenExers who didn't know nothing of "sacrifice.") But whenever I've spoken with veterans of WWII or other wars, it's surprised me how surprised they are to be asked about their experiences, what they saw, and what it was like when they were 20 something, or younger. While I have the greatest respect and admiration for the young men fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan, The Phillipines, etc., for they are certainly the equal of the WW2 generation, the current generation is total can't hold a candle to that generation.

I've tutored a couple thousand kids since I started in 1989 and right now I can say there is only ONE former student of mine serving in Iraq. All the young men, with those few exceptions I've mentioned, just want to get money and get laid. Sorry, but its the truth.

A friend of my mom's in Iowa was a young Marine captain on Iwo Jima. The license plate on his Buick says "IWO."

however, you need to be more optimistic about this generation. they are not the potheads of the 60's, they are more conservative in ways, and i believe religion plays a bigger role in their life than the baby boomers. the generation that fought WWII had their work cut out for them in that they also faced the great depression and then after WWII communism. these guys fighting in Iraq are of this generation and are doing a superb job. lets be optimistic about america and the future.

...I had a brother, Erik, in the Ozarks - Harrison, AR that is...
My uncle Vic Schutt fought on Iwo, and I attended the events in Fredericksburg, TX over the weekend in his honor.
Awesome meeting the survivors and the Japanese who came at their own expense for the reenactment.
I was raised to be a hippie but thank God have rejected the existentialism of my folks for hard-corps Christianity. Jesus reigns!
