Standard fare sovietization. They have to appropriate the farms so they can inflict terror famines. Next come the forced labor camps. After that they can destroy the trade unions that put them in power. Ever communist regieme for that past 80 years has begun this way. Stalin was the pioneer. It's amazing nobody has ever learned from history.

That is my leading cause of existential surprise, also.

It's more than that, though, folks are determined to deny history, if at all possible.

I believe this fact linked to the acceptance of the modern State as arbiter of all issues - the politicization of life.

Call it the Cassandra Syndrome. ;^)

Oops! I meant an anti-Cassandra Syndrome - a fatal inability to discern the future from the evidence of experience.
