We've gone back and forth on the question whether Osama bin Laden is dead. Today, Matthew Heidt of Froggy Ruminations argues that bin Laden is an ex-terrorist:

I don't think they are hiding anything. Bush is a honest man and would not hold it back.
Having said that. The only reason Bush would not tell is if they have someone pretending to be UBL for intelligence purposes. When I say pretending. Someone who can exactly duplicate voice and mannerisms but is in contact only through radio, or internet.

That makes sense to me.
Someone quoted Teresa Heinz Kerry (on a mixed conservatives vs liberals site) as claiming Osama was already in custody, and would be produced as an "October surprise" in an attampt to sway the electorate in Pres. Bush's favor.
Somebody else chimed in: blaming the Pres. because Osama was NOT in custody,
I then asked: "Suppose he is already dead ?"
I'm happy to report the liberals "fled the field in disorder".

Or he's dead.

I've heard the same - albeit just rumors, or commentary...What is interesting is Kerry's challenge to Bush on Tora Bora twice and W didn't respond..

By why not make it public? After all, this is the one thing that could ensure the President's re-election. Because the President knows that making UBL a martyr would serve to further inspire his minions, and he realizes that preventing this from happening is more important than his re-election. There is another reason for keeping UBL's demise quiet. If the President were to announce that bin Laden was officially worm food, the Democrats would immediately declare the WOT over and start screaming "bring the boys home" even louder than they are now.

By using that tactic the terrorists kept bringing in more weapons and more targets, all while the eyes are in the sky's. Also, leads them into a false sense of just how powerful and great they are, which leades to making big mistakes.
After you allow them to regroup, BANG!

I have been wondering about this for awhile too. I may be giving GW more credit for nobility than I should but, I wonder if he knows Osama is dead or is in custody and is waiting for the election to be over before the announcement to give the country something to cheer about without the taint of "October surprise".

Very interesting take.I find it an obvious take. I don't know the fate of OBL. but I know it is in our interest to pretend he is alive. Let the loons break the news.

I think you are too much into conspiracy.
Fact is- after several false alarms about Osama, I no longer think Rummie or anyone else is willing to say Bin Laden is dead or captured until they get DNA to prove it. I do believe the CIA verified Bin Laden's voice on a tape released subsequent to Tora Bora bombing.

What about the taped audio-messages from Osama Bin Laden? A lot of organizations say those were authentic. Bin Laden is a shrewd terrorist leader that easily could be a succesful CEO. He's not just a publicity whore. I think it's dangerous to assume bin Laden is dead. Always assume your enemy is alive, rational and doing the best in his abilities to kill you so as to keep you on your toes.

Osama bin dead since Tora Bora. Not a peep in nearly 3 years and there has been a LOT of things he would have wanted to comment about. Why don't we announce it? Simple - there's no body. You can't claim he's dead until you can prove it. I remember a month after Tora Bora when one of his men announced in an e-mail that he was dead. The Arab world went nuts and the guy had to retract the story and claim that he meant someone else was dead. I believed him the first time.
