Sen. John McCain refused to work for restitution to survivors of the World War II Bataan Death March a few years ago - when there were only 1,100 alive - said our trade deals with Japan were "too sensitive."
Update on Polish cooperation:
I just visited my old POW/MIA office yesterday afternoon. After catching up on six years of what I've been doing since working at the POW/MIA Office, the bosses informed me that President Bush's administration hasn't been involved in the POW/MIA issues as much as they would like. The support is there and the President is willing to listen to the issues -- but no hard push to resolve cases as Bush Sr. did. It appears that junior doesn't have the same focus on the issue as the father.
I was surprised that the bosses didn't catch any of the DNC speech where Kerry was credited for work on the POW/MIA issue. They were not happy that Kerry is claiming to have helped in the issue. They confirmed my assertions that Kerry and his office never provided any assistance to the commission. In fact, the Executive Secretary stated flat out that Kerry had impeded our work and couldn't believe that Kerry would try to claim working with us. He was tickled that Kerry had been appointed by Bush Sr to the post. He also has a thick green book which contains Kerry's Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA which started in 1991 -- he said it was useless.
