Yet the democrats manage to win while staying true to their own base. Do you contend that conservative principles are less marketable to the mushy middle than liberal ones?

In California, they are. In Alabama, Texas, Florida, etc they are not. I am all for running more conservative candidates in states where their positions are closer to the mainstream, but you have to adjust somewhat in more liberal states like California. Even the Democrats have been known to run pro-lifers for office in the deep south.

I guess you & I disagree on that point. As silly as it may seem to you, conservatism can still sell in the state that not too long ago birthed some pretty conservative trends, even by national standards, IF the state party would get behind it.

BTW I agree the partial birth abortion issue is a good point in Arnold's favor.

How can you say that without at least *trying* to actually SUPPORT a conservative candidate for a change?

Conservative principles are ultimately marketable anywhere in the nation outside corrupt and decrepit urban centers.

California is remarkable for it's absolute refusal to support conservatives. Even Simon, with all his problems, AS THE REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE couldn't get GOP RINOs to support him and with all his other problems that's all it took for him to win.
