Noticed this in the Parking Lot on Websleuths:

In the Julian news dated Feb. 12. both David Neal Westerfield, and Lisa Lynn Westerfield have petitioned for a name change. Changing Westerfield to West. They have to be in court on March 12, 2003 for this. The "notice" is to run for 4 successive weeks prior to the court date.

This is a very small local newspaper.

That is sad for what ever reason. They may have done it at his behest, or just so have some semblance of normalcy or privacy at the least. It doesn't necessarily mean what some think it implies.

What about the rest of it? What about the fact that so much of the forensics doesn't line up with the theory? Oh, wait, that's not Rick Roberts approved version.

The judge should never make people publicize their new names in the news paper..but if this story is true..do you know why he does it? For the CREDITORS..in case the person is trying to avoid "creditors". In this case I think we can all agree, that those poor kids were NOT trying to evade creditors. MAYBE this case can spark some new legislation to PROTECT victims like dw's children.

What about victims of violent crimes who want to change their names..or spousal abuse victims. The law is ANTIQUATED..it's all about protecting some business..

Until a lawyer gets involved. Spousal abuse victims can change their name. It's called divorce, you can ask for it to be part of the deal. They'd have to change alot more than just their names for total anonymity.

OTOH, I suppose for whatever reason it's easier to disappear in a common name. Do you think that the rest of the people who have that name should change it? What about Peterson?

It's about protection..yes, if a person wants to not be tracked by the abuser...he should have that right. If Peterson winds up being innocent of the crime, then yes I guess so? I'm just thinking outloud. If my idea isn't a good one, I'm open to being told why.
