Sure, when you are willing to recognize that each successive wave of immigrants that came to this country brought their own unique social/economic baggage with them. Hundred of thousands of decent American workers were displaced by the Irish...who were willing to work for far less money then those they pushed out.

You will also have to admit that the United States had a different type of economy in the days of unlimited immigration. We are no longer in need of millions of immigrants who have an average 6th grade education to work in the mills.
