Mexican Consulate Opens In Downtown Indianapolis. (Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish)

The Mexican Consulate in Indianapolis will be open for business Monday. It's an office that will serve a group of people that's growing rapidly in our city and state. Mayor Bart Peterson's office has worked for about two years with the Mexican government and the state of Indiana to get this consulate opened.

You don't have to look hard to see why the consulate is needed. Drive down Washington Street a few miles west of downtown, and you'll see the fruits of our Hispanic and Latino community's labor. Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish. There are now some 34,000 Latinos and Hispanics in Indianapolis, and 60% of them are Mexican.

"We have an education system that welcomes the immigrants and we like the way we are treated because we find that the American community is welcoming in general," said Roberto Curci, La Guia Magazine.

The city even has two publications geared toward this growing community. "The Voice of Indiana," a bilingual newspaper and "The Guide of Indianapolis," a magazine for Hispanics and Latinos. There's even a new Hispanic and Latino yellow pages.

Local businesses are forging ties with that community. Kroger just donated a van to the Hispanic Center of Indianapolis to thank them for translation help that the center has provided for the grocery chain.

"As we change and we are changing as a city, I think it was important for business to recognize that and we have recognized it," said Jeff Golc, Kroger.

The change will continue. Just ask the woman who helps run the grocery store on West Washington Street. New Hispanic and Latino customers come in for her authentic products all the time.

"Like once in a while there will be somebody new that comes. You know, like, "Oh, we just moved here and we came to see how it is." So yeah, we always get new people that come here," said Irasema Delgado, store manager.

The Mexican Consulate will serve three states: Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. It will serve as the Mexican government's primary link with those states on issues such as immigration, trade and economic development.

I cannot wait until Mr. Bush waves the Amnesty-wand over all the illegals' heads. Then all migrants here will then be legal - and the burdens facing our schools, hospitals, courts, jails and neighborhoods will simply vanish.

And it will also be an invitation for more people to enter the country illegally.

"The schools of the areas I'm quite familiar with, Los Angeles and the Metro Washington DC area have suffered significantly from a high influx of Mexican and Central American migrant pupils."

That's terrible

Yes it is.

These are people who think Mexico is unworthy of putting consulates or embassies ANYWHERE.

Right now I would be one of those. If their elected representatives are going to be making statements about America having no borders and that illegal immigrants are not illegal then we should kick Mexico out on its fat ass. Mexico wants to protect their elite incredibly rich at Americas expense so they push their poor undesirables across the border. They talk about immigrant rights while completely ignoring the murder, rapes, drug dealing and threat of terrorism etc that is coming across the border. Sorry but to hell with them.

Yes, what a shame this thread isn't about the failing DC schools but about the positive impact of a Hispanic community on their neighborhood.

Strange thing about those DC school. I would have been willing to bet that they were terrible because they've been managed to death by the liberal school boards in that area. Now I find that DC must have good schools before all those Hispanic types showed up.

Must have relationship to Krogers and the airports.

Prove they were and I'll answer the question

Apparently you didn't follow the news too well at that time because it was widely published. Here's from CNN: (sweet aren't they ---they don't help them by improving their country but they prepare them kits to leave)

The new plan is to issue survival kits to would-be migrants. The kits, put together by the Mexican Social Security administration, include antidotes for snake bites, rehydration tablets, first-aid materials and dried foods to use on protracted crossings.

"We know their health needs, we know their education issues. We understand," said Juan Hernandez, of the Mexican Presidential Office for Mexicans Abroad.

Beginning June 18, some 200,000 kits will be distributed by health workers along the border.

Pretty good actually. We've got a terrible problem with our storm sewers here in this area. I never made the connection before but we didn't have this problem before that Vietnamese family moved into the neighborhood.

So can Vietnamese be used as a convenient scape goat for failed social and infrastructure programs? We have some Hispanics but the problems didn't start until after they were established.

How are your solutions coming along? It appears that the only "solution" being taken is constant griping about the situation.

Speaking of strawmen...did you get any sympathy from anyone with your "racist" cry?

No?

It didn't work for Daschle either.

Actually I hope no one from DU is monitoring this thread.

If we can successfully blame 50 years of liberal school policies in the DC area on Hispanics it will only give the Democrats another line of defense. More and more Hispanics are voting Republican, the Democrats could turn on them easy enough.

He sure did that.

Well Texas, it was fun freeping with you this evening. I might get back before I head out again but I'm bushed and turning in for the evening. A man can only take so much laughter in one evening and thanks to these folks my sides are hurting.

Remember, keep it all in proper focus.

Griping" (and contacting elected officials, and supporting good candidates, and letter writing, and donating, etc,) beats your approach - rolling over and accepting, without a whimper, the de-facto merger of the United States with Mexico

TANCREDO FOR PRESIDENT. Spread the word but first tell him he is running. I want him to succeed in the worst way am concerned that his supporters are wasting valuable time by simply bitching and moaning on FR. Get with the program guys, times wasting.

Come back with data on how massive Hispanic immigration has improved schools, either previously well-functioning ones, or ones that already had enough problems to begin with.

Oops, I hadn't signed completely off yet. I had some other things to close up first then I make one more swing by to check on the brave folks who like to post smart comments once they're feeling safe thinking you went to bed.

Some of your buddies should have warned you about that.

Well here's the deal for you Skippy...I don't fetch. In fact if you want to defend the liberal school policies in the DC area that's fine with me. Why don't you fetch the data that demonstrates how the reason DC area schools are crap is because of Hispanics and not the failed and corrupt policies that have been leading them for 50 years.

I know that we're susposed to accept it for granted when you types say it's so, like the Krogers and airport workers thing that Joe has going for him, but most people probably want something a little more substantial.

You sure do have a hard time accepting that Hispanic people can have a positive impact on their community don't you? Why is that? We're talking Indianapolis and when it doesn't you all's agenda we're suddenly talking Juarez, DC schools.

It's okay...they aren't all evil.

As someone in the next big state to be "Californiaized" into permanent DNC territory, you will no doubt enjoy the results of Bush blowing this last window of opportunity to do something about our insane immigration laws and practices.
