How the boomers screwed Europe
The Economist ^ | May 28th 2026

Posted on 05/31/2026 2:53:08 PM PDT by MinorityRepublican

Once upon a time, inequality in Europe was largely horizontal. The rich western half drove BMWs and holidayed abroad, while the poorer east rewired its own appliances and queued for bread.

But three decades of catch-up growth in erstwhile communist countries has put paid to jokes about Romanian cars whose top speed was “downhill”. These days inequality in Europe has a vertical dimension—one that goes up and down family trees.

Youngsters unable to move out of their parents’ spare room due to sky-high house prices wonder if they will ever enjoy the lifestyle as adults which they knew as kids.

Thirty-somethings in jobs pay hefty taxes to fund the pensions of oldies who retired in their prime. Costs related to ageing are guzzling a quarter of the European Union’s GDP, a figure unlikely to fall as the Old Continent grows older still. To be a young European is to feel oneself an unwitting participant in an intergenerational confidence trick.

“I am a boomer and I never even thought that idea at any time. I also don’t know anyone else who is a boomer who thinks like that.”

I don’t know of any Democrat or ‘mainstream’ European leaders who even acknowledge that a Great Replacement is in progress (although I suspect they will, once they’re sure it cannot be stopped).

“We realize it’s wrong to demonize groups based on sex, race, etc but it’s perfectly correct & logical to pretend that boomers are a homogeneous group”

Never claimed that.

“You come out bold and retreat fast when reality is invoked.”

I don’t know what you’re referring to. My post was that self-exterminators were relegated to the margins in prior generations, but not the Baby Boomer generation - in fact, the self-exterminators have DEFINED that generation, given their political power.

If something can’t go on forever, it won’t.

And I doubt Mohammed is going to pay exorbitant taxes to support Pierre and Hans in their gererous retirements.

There are several problems with Western Europe in particular. A big one is their lavish social welfare states. It was one thing when they were homogenous, high trust societies and birthrates were still at least at replacement level. People had a certain level of national solidarity and didn’t mind providing for pensioners, the disabled, etc. Its a totally different story now. First their birthrates collapsed about a generation ago. Then to pile even more trouble on top of that, they imported millions of military age Muslim and African males who have no skills, do not speak the language, have no cultural affinity and who instead of contributing economically, are instead living on the public dole all while committing so many crimes as to destroy all social trust between people.

Now if the above was not bad enough, the EU bureaucrats stifled innovation in a morass of regulations and the Establishment bought into Gaia Worship hook, line and sinker. The result is energy costs in the UK and Germany now make it impossible for them to compete economically. Western Europe is not in a slump. Its finished. Which is a real tragedy.

Lived Nine years in Italy through 2017. In my observations the young, even if highly educated, had to leave to find really gainful employment. Unless their family had an already established business. They do have an equivalent to our Social Security but it is a pittance and not enough to live on. OTOH, health care is ‘free’…. But you get what you pay for. My experience with Italian hospitals leads me to advise…. Avoid them if at all possible.

but I still haven’t seen any examples of a culture DEMANDING mass migration of foreigners who OPENLY plan to replace and likely exterminate their existing culture/race (in this case, Whites)...until the Baby Boomer generation.

To be clear, this was not a feature of the entire Baby Boomer generation. It was imposed on all of us by a tiny minority of far leftists, who deliberately took over the Universities and cultural institutions. A whole lot of it lies in the wholesale rejection of God (very similar to the Jacobins in France).

The American Revolution embraced God. The French Revolution rejected God. The current race to the bottom rejects God.

It reminds me most of the Jacobins in France at the time of the French Revolution. France has been importing large numbers of Muslims, bent on destroying French culture and institutions, so there are some parallels there.

Today, we see it in much of France, Germany, and the NATO countries. It is a perversion of Leftisim, with secular humanism, and the perverse idea that all of humanity is the same.

Remember Olivetti? Once had the market in typewriters. Rennet when Fiata and Alfa Romeos and Renaults and Peugeots and Triumphs and MGs were popular in America? I think European labor rag killed those companies here - they couldn’t compete with the Japanese and out domestic industry. Look to Eastern Europe for any kind of Renaissance. If possible….. The Czech Skoda is a good vehicle for example.

Well, yes, you did exactly that when you castigated them as a group.

“To be clear, this was not a feature of the entire Baby Boomer generation.”

Obviously, or we wouldn’t even be here.

“It was imposed on all of us by a tiny minority of far leftists, who deliberately took over the Universities and cultural institutions.”

I think that the ‘tiny minority’ applied more to the so-called ‘Greatest Generation’ - the ones already in power in the institutions needed to able to self-exterminate. By the time of Boomers, it was a significant minority.

“A whole lot of it lies in the wholesale rejection of God (very similar to the Jacobins in France).”

Absolutely - and think their total control of television was the weapon they needed.

“Well, yes, you did exactly that when you castigated them as a group.”

I used the word “Generation” to avoid exactly that.

Yo. You don’t get to define a whole generation of people. That’s complete sophistry. You are promoting a very warped world view in this thread. There are people/groups that are interested in eliminating groups, Nazis comes to mind, Bill Gates, the Canadian government, who got so far out on the liberal branch that killing people to save money sounds great, Islamists, Margaret Sanger, etc. The common denominator of those groups is not the year of their birth.

One of the shaky parts of your premise is the flexibility you allow yourself in defining who is a boomer, who is being eliminated and who comprises “us”. Self eliminators are rare. Most eliminators wish to eliminate those they believe are other or are disposable. In the case of many liberals the cant they spout makes them “good” whites. In all cases the use of boxes allows the dehumanization of individuals.

“Very effective BRAINWASHING by the older generation, specifically the Boomer Generation.”

Um...not indoctrination by the “Boomers”, but by public education. I’ve never met a “Boomer” who supported illegal immigration. They exist, but not in my circles. But the PUBLIC SCHOOLS have been indoctrinating the young my entire life, and it was my generation that fought for the right to send kids to private schools or homeschool them!

Look, if you want to shine and whimper your whole life, go ahead! No Boomer can make you grow up. But I can tell you any good thing in life will come only if you work and fight for it, and that is true of EVERY generation.

BTW - Jim Robinson was born in 1945. Maybe try following his example instead of blaming him and others for not handing you a perfect world!

I’m sorry. grouping them is the issue, pretending that a generation can be denounced as a group is an assertion that they are homogeneous on a variety of metrics you define.
