It made new problems for the "serious men". I was/am one.

My strategy was to find serious Catholic women, and that was a good start.

A lot of these women, however, from their early 20s on to their late 20s, weren't sure if they were ready to think along the lines of marriage, and I didn't want to waste my time with a woman who didn't have a destination plan.

There was one woman, 27 years old, intelligent, slender, and pretty, and we got along mostly fine. I told her after three months of spending time together (she wasn't even willing to think of herself as a "girlfriend" yet, though I did meet her family) that she would have to decide by six months. She said she wouldn't decide by six months, so I said, "Okay, good-bye".

Two weeks later, she sent a letter with a box of candy, with a letter from her grandmother, whom I had met. The grandmother's letter told her that I was a keeper, that men like that don't exist anymore. Well, I was flattered. But she was trying to re-open the door without making any kind of commitment to being open to an end game.

So, I wrote her back, thanking her for the candies, and letting her know that I had a girlfriend (which was true, but that one did NOT work out). I don't know whatever happened to her. I partly blame her personality, but also the line that women get fed that they can just float along waiting for lightning to strike or something.

It seems to me that the point is to find that person with whom you can really connect and build a life - not just getting married within a certain amount of time.

All of this should have been learned before getting out of high school, don’t be overly nice and solicitous, don’t seem desperate, don’t beg, if you sense you are becoming friends then act, because if you don’t then sex is off the table, without appearing deliberate, have a little male mystique, even if you are a basically a labrador dog, maintain yourself no matter how head over heels you are.

Women can sense phoniness so firm scripts and behavior advice are harmful unless you only take in the proper amount of it that suits you, and that you can absorb naturally, a minor tweaking of your type rather than a secret formula that is a fix-all for all personality types.
