I just heard an unconfirmed report that Diane Feinstein passed away in her sleep last night.
That is going to send things into orbit. They would not have 51 votes anymore.
The rumor is floating around Twitter. Hmmm, weird.

There would be no recall then. The Lt Governor would step as there would be a vacancy and the recall would be invalided due to Newsom not being Governor anymore. Pretty neat solution for them.

That demon has been sidestepping the Reaper for awhile now. He’ll eventually “harvest” it.
A similar situation happened in New Jersey with the election between Bob Torricelli and Doug Forrester in 2002.
Torricelli was behind in the polls as his scandals were catching up with him.
Rather than risk losing his seat to the Republican, the Torch resigned and former New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg was appointed to fill his seat. The New Jersey Democrat party also petitioned the court to swap Lautenberg in place of Torricelli on the ballot. Republicans complained, stating that absentee ballots had already been sent out and were being returned, in other words, voting had already begun.
New Jersey being Jersey, the court sided with the Democrats and ordered new ballots to be mailed out with Lautenberg on it, stating that "voters deserved a competitive election." This was despite the fact that New Jersey voters had a competitive election and disliked the candidate that the Democrats ran.
Apparently, to Democrats, a "competitive election" is one where the Democrat candidate is ahead. If the Democrat is behind, then it becomes "the voters deserve a choice."
Forrester lost, and Republicans were denied the seat. Can the same thing happen in California if Newsom decides to resign ahead of the recall election to deny Larry Elder the win?
