Motorolas DynaTAC (Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage) 8000X was the worlds first commercially released mobile phone. Measuring 13 inch x 1.75 inch x 3.5 inch, this cell phone was released in 1983 with a price tag of $3,995.

Cells phones, video cameras were becoming available in 1988 (but only becoming common much, much later, well after 1988!), but were “just-on-the-market” in 1982-83 as point out.

In 1982, it was pagers (for a few such as on-call doctors - and NEVER high-schoolers!) and 8 mm film cameras. And 8 mm cameras were “not cool” for high school students. “Those” films were taken only by parents and grandparents.
