The laws regarding marriage, property, children in the 19th century were horrific for women. Just a cursory glance at Ibsen's A Doll's House tells you everything you need to know. Better yet, a great production will send audiences into floods of tears and anger. That the laws have swung too far in the other direction is certainly true.
