The laws regarding marriage, property, children in the 19th century were horrific for women. Just a cursory glance at Ibsen's A Doll's House tells you everything you need to know. Better yet, a great production will send audiences into floods of tears and anger. That the laws have swung too far in the other direction is certainly true. But that's what happens in decadent, devolving societies...
