What was it about Chicago, originally, that lured all these radical leftists there? I mean I know the city was basically run by the Mob forever, but that doesn’t seem to explain it.

What was it about Chicago, originally, that lured all these radical leftists there? I mean I know the city was basically run by the Mob forever, but that doesn’t seem to explain it. It mostly has to do with Chicago being the largest industrial city in America--the capital of the Rust Belt--with a history of labor radicalism that goes back to the 1870s.
