On page 26, of "Dreams From My Father", it says he discovered his “birth certificate” during his high school years (about the same time that he got his SSN from Connecticut) inside a book with “old vaccination forms” and an article published in a Hawaii newspaper written by his alleged father.

Since he had over 20 unpaid parking tickets from when he lived in Massachusetts, he also had a driver's license. State law in Massachusetts requires you to present documentation of your date of birth to get a driver's license. So he's had it all along.
