Sounds like “anonymous” is right; I think back then (and even now) people needed to be able to prove legally they were married, and not just have a ‘church’ wedding.

IIRC, a legal marriage doc is needed to do the name change.
Would have needed it for passport, bank account, driving license, etc.
(Why wait a whole year, unless they did that Celtic “year-and-a-day” type of ‘marriage’ OR at some point as outlined above, she had to get legal proof of being married)
