The basic question is -

I find this long distance connection to a social security number issued in March of 1977 a stretch and understand the question. But assuming the number is valid and not from an act of brazen identity thief (that Ayers & company were very good at) then the story is about the only one that makes sense.
OK is there any reason the grandparents (Stanley and Madelyn) could not have had legal custody?

Why would a minor get a s.s. # back then?
I only remember kids getting # because a parent had died and there was money coming in for support, which went into an account that they couldn’t touch till they were of age.
