A friend of mine is going to be drifting right in April, when she has to file for the first time without her recently deceased mother as a dependant. She was very lefty on health care issues because her mom was medi/medi (California) and the taxpayer covered for probably about two million dollars of care in her last 2 years. I mean literally, the bill for her last month in ICU was nearly one million, if I remember correctly.

But now her mother is gone and my friend earns a great deal of money. She's not in the 1%, but she's in the 5% and the taxman is going to start taking chunks out of her with big, sharp teeth. I'm just waiting.

If the recently deceased was deceased past July 2011, then your friend will get “bad news” in 4/13 as your friend could still claim the mom as a dependent until then.

Correct my if I am wrong. But if her mother passed this tax year she still gets to claim her.

You might have to wait till 2013 for the drift right to start.
