That's really interesting. Are you speaking of the southern parts of Northern states because most accounts I've read and researched showed showed quite a bit of pillaging, rape, deliberate destruction of crops and homes and in some cases...outright torture by those Yankee troops. Although they came to free the slaves, ironically, the free black people and slaves didn't fare much better when it came to property damage and molestation of women. It seems the tales those Yanks had heard made it hard to believe that any black person in the South could actually own property and viewed the women as chattel.

I am sure you could name a few Southern towns in the border states who where glad to see the Yankee army but I wouldn't characterize it as "by many in Southern towns." That's just ridiculous.

East Tennessee is the region I was referring to. Admittedly, Unionist sentiment there was much greater than in many other locales, but according to some historians pro-Confederate home front sentiment was never as great anywhere as many think. A good place to start would be Bitterly Divided by David Williams of Valdosta State University.

I think people would do well not to confuse the valor of the reb warrior with the epidemic of Confederate misdeeds and oppressions of the political Confederacy.

I have book on Union atrocities in the South. The game plan from 1863 on was on the civilian South as much as the military.

Those means undertaken by Sherman, Grant, Sheridan, Banks, Butler etc on their own former countrymen are applauded today by the very people who today would scream racial profiling or other objections if we guard our borders or fight Islam straight up.

They are hypocrites, this is about racial bitterness for them...nothing else. The rest is just platitudes and canards
