One murdered by the home guard. One a victim of extortion by the local reb dictator. One threatened with hanging so he had to take to the hills. One a Methodist preacher persecuted by the local bosses because he did not preach the gospel of the Confederacy. The true Confederate believers went bravely off to manfully battle the Yankees but they left behind a bad element who too often abused their neighbors for fun and profit. No wonder the Yankee army was greeted as liberators by many in Southern towns.
