As I understand most variants of different theories as to where Obama may have been born (excluding Hawaii, of course), the prevailing theories on probable location of birth are Kenya and Canada.

I want to explore the Canadian theory, using some notes from Freeper Chief Engineer from a short while back, which I've updated with recently-discovered facts. Chief Engineer pieced together much of this with her endless hours of research:

Ann likely had a “shotgun wedding” and then discovered her husband was a rake willing to become involved with any number of co-eds. The little tidbit Frank Marshall Davis wrote in his biography was the teaser, “...a Kenyan student split, leaving behind TWO pregnant blondes”. Also, in Messages From My Father, Obama Jr references threats by Ann's father to attempt to cancel Obama Sr’s visa if he wasn't cooperative.

Her parents likely sent Ann to her mother's friend in Seattle (likely in Spring 1961 after the purported marriage) and the friend made arrangements for Ann to go to an unwed mother's home in Vancouver (there are a handful of choices, including a prominent home that closed in ‘68) where she could have given birth and also given the baby up for adoption. This would explain why Ann didn't know how to change diapers — contact between mothers and babies at such a home wasn't encouraged.

Ann's parents had arranged this deal with her, telling her that they would pay for her to attend Univ of Washington after the birth (which she had wanted to do anyway). Her high school friends at the time had already commented about the fact that if they encountered blacks while they were out they would cross the street to avoid them. The scandal of a white girl giving birth to a black baby would have driven Ann out of the Seattle. However, Vancouver B.C. was quite experienced in dealing with many different races and intermingling.

HOWEVER, once Ann gave birth, she changed her mind and asked her mother's friend to come and get her and Obama Jr in Vancouver. The SAME friend of Ann's mother lent Ann the car for the Susan Blake visit in late-Aug 1961.

Arriving back in Seattle, Ann phoned her parents in Hawaii and told them that she decided to keep the baby. This prompted her mother Madelyn to register the birth with the state of Hawaii.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In 1961, the word of an immediate relative was sufficient to register a birth in Hawaii, unlike now when they ask for documents such as medical check-ups from before birth, well-baby records, etc.

This notification from Madelyn to the state of Hawaii explains how Obama’s CertificaTION says that the (LOCAL) Registrar FILED the form as a vital statistic on Aug 8, 1961, instead of the form being ACCEPTED by the STATE REGISTRAR, as we see with nearly all other CertificaTIONs. This registration by Madelyn also helps to explain the the newspaper birth announcement originating via formal notification from the state.

Madelyn, being the mortgage administrator at Bankoh, knew of a safe address to use and her registration of birth generated the birth announcement. As some people have said, it was a pretty long-term conspiracy to register a birth and have a birth announcement in the paper — it all happened automatically once Madelyn filed the paperwork for her daughter in Hawaii.

None of these happenings in 1961 were obviously ever about a future run for the presidency. From Madelyn's standpoint, it was about “preserving her daughter's honor” while lending legitimacy to the birth.

In late-1962, Ann notified her parents she was coming back to Hawaii now that Obama Sr had left for Harvard. They rented the apartment for her at 1427 Alexander St, Apt #110.

She once again moved in with her parents at the home at 2277 Kamehameha Ave when she registered to attend the spring 1963 semester at UH at Manoa. BTW, Madelyn's co-workers didn't know she had a grandson until Jr arrived at the bank one day after he began attending Punahou in early 1972. Grandpa was his companion and grandpa was the one who was instrumental in Jr attending Punahou.
