Well, if you saw it happen in 1968, it most certainly could have been happening in 1960.

Did they buy or rent the residence in Honolulu?
Of course, that may be overblown too. They moved to Honolulu in 1960 and it was already very expensive there. By 1970 the Japanese had taken over, and there was a lot of resentment from the native Hawaiians. They'd bought up all the gbig hotels and had replaced the native Hawaiian staff with Japanese staff. I took my family there at about that time and was "told off" in a rather quiet manner by a tour guide we hired to drive us out to the Polynesian Cultural Center because we were staying at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel. The guide informed us in no uncertain terms that we were staying in a JAPANESE hotel which was sucking the life blood out ot the Hawaiians.
