I CANNOT stress this enough - this area was UNIQUE and different from the other land in Kenya! This would have included Mombasa up until Oct 5, 1963, Obama JR's possible place of birth in Aug 1961, in addition to the possible location of Obama SR's and Ann Dunham's marriage in February 1961. IOW, it gives us another place to look other than in Kenyan and BNA records ...

The Sultan of Zanzibar hived off an area of 10 miles from the Indian Ocean water mark and placed it under his rule. It is known as the 10-mile Coastal Strip. It did not fall under the British Protectorate like the rest of Kenya but was ruled from Zanzibar

“When the country got independence in 1963, this area was annexed to the rest of the country from Zanzibar, but the first African Government did not include it in its initial land policies,” said Mr Kapombe.

The ten-mile coastal strip of land is as controversial as landlessness and squatters. The history of this piece of land, stretching ten miles from the Indian Ocean to the hinterland, has remained contentious.
...
In a letter dated October 5, 1963, Kenyatta bound his government to some undertaking in recognition of the coastal strip. “I have the honour to refer to the discussions held between our respective governments on the subject of the coastal strip and to place on record the following undertakings by the Government of Kenya,” reads the letter to the prime minister of Zanzibar.

His note further reads: “The free hold titles to land in Coast region that are already registered will at all times be recognised. Steps will be taken to ensure the continuation procedure for the registration of new free hold titles and the rights of free holders will at all times be preserved”. (Note: the Sultan of Zanzibar fled after a revolution that took place barely three months later)

The letter was used as a legal instrument binding the Government to respect the status quo of land prior to independence.

TRAVEL:

Mombasa is a major trade centre and home to Kenya’s only large seaport, the Kilindini Harbour. Kilindini is an old Swahili term that means “deep”. The port is so called because the channel is naturally very deep.

Moi International Airport
The airport was originally known as “Port Reitz Airport”. It was built during the Second World War by the Engineer Corps of the South African Army. During that war it was used by the Fleet Air Arm for the defence of the British Eastern Fleet which was based at nearby Kilindini Harbour from 1942,

Mombasa has a railway station and Kenya Railways runs overnight passenger trains from Mombasa to Nairobi, though the service is less extensive than it used to be.

Highways connect Mombasa to capital Nairobi, former Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam while northward road link to Malindi and Lamu. Within Mombasa, most local people use Matatus (minibuses) to move between villages and Mombasa Island. Mombasa port is the largest in Kenya but there is little or no scheduled passenger service.

International cruise ships frequent the port, thus giving Mombasa a “Natural Harbour.”

Whoops! Sorry it's so big! But now Mombassa, Coast General Hospital, the date of birth and the certification date of 17th February 1964 make sense...the certificate was raised just in time for the March, 1964 divorce.

From the article, it gets even more confusing. Evidently, the Brits had leased the strip and paid the lease monies to the Sultan of Zanzibar.
As I said, it is very possible that there could be three birth records from that strip.
It was OWNED by Zanzibar.
It was a Brit protectorate leased from Zanzibar.
It became part of the Kenyan government when they were granted independence in 1963.
In either case, there would be a British record. That doesn’t negate the fact that others might exist.

In 1920, the territory was renamed and its administration changed; the interior became Kenya Colony and a coastal strip (10 mi/16 km wide) was constituted the Protectorate of Kenya. From the 1920s to the 40s, European settlers controlled the government and owned extensive farmlands; Indians maintained small trade establishments and were lower-level government employees; and Africans grew cash crops such as coffee and cotton on a small scale, were subsistence farmers, or were laborers in the towns (especially Nairobi).

In the 1920s, Africans began to protest their inferior status. Protest reached a peak between 1952 and 1956 with the so-called Mau Mau Emergency, a complex armed revolt led by the Kikuyu, which was in part a rebellion against British rule and in part an attempt to reestablish traditional land rights and ways of governance. The British declared a state of emergency and imprisoned many of the colony’s nationalist leaders, including Jomo Kenyatta . After the revolt, Britain increased African representation in the colony’s legislative council until, in 1961, there was an African majority.

Modern Kenya

On Dec. 12, 1963, Kenya (including both the colony and the protectorate) became independent. In 1964 the country became a republic, with Kenyatta as president. The first decade of independence was characterized by disputes among ethnic groups (especially between the Kikuyu and the Luo)
