"Kenya became independent on 12 December 1963, with Kenyatta as premier. Zanzibar had become independent two days earlier; but the coastal strip had been ceded by the sultan of Zanzibar to Kenya in October. The country voluntarily became a one-party state in November 1964,
and in December 1964 became a republic within the Commonwealth, with Kenyatta as president."
I was assuming they started calling it "Republic of Kenya" after it became a republic in 1964. In 63 it was still a one-party rule, as the blurb mentions, not a true republic. Maybe not the greatest source, but that's all I've got.

Actually Kenya became independent on December 12, 1963. It was declared by it’s president to be a Republic on June 1, 1964.

The USSR had one party rule also.
To some, “Republic” means merely an independent country that is not a monarchy or one-man dictatorship.

We obviously don’t have enough 45-yr-old Kenyan freepers, better start recruiting some.
