I’m only going on what I’ve read, however, and can’t vouch for whether being born to an unwed 17yo American abroad would have indeed deprived him of automatic US citizenship.

It would deprive him of his citizenship since at that time she would have to have lived in the United States for 5 years after the age of 14. She wasn't 19 when she had him, so he is disqualified.

That was my understanding, thanks. I actually can’t see Americans uniting behind the finer points of ‘natural born’—but not being a citizen, they would get.
