"Appeal for Transportation Money by Barack Obama Sr.
Barack Obama Sr. had been accepted to Harvard University as a graduate student, but he didn’t have enough money to buy a plane ticket to Cambridge, Mass. In June 1962, he pleaded for emergency assistance from the African-American Institute. The letter is one of many documents discovered by an archivist at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem:
