What happened in December of 1971 in terms of CUSTODY?
There is a custody question. No one wants to deal with it. But it is very real. No way Obama is in legal custody of SAD or BHO Sr. after December of 1971. They are both foreign citizens living and domiciled in foreign countries.
So who is the legal guardian as of January 1972?
No one wants to answer that sticky question, do they?
That’s where the dunham tax returns would come in; if they had 0 as a dependent then they would have custody.
And a FOIA of the dunham passport/travel would also come in handy here.
The simplest answer may be (and I say MAY) is that the dunhams were notified by SADO and Lolo that they wanted the kid to be in Hawaii and then one of the grandparents (or both ) went to Indonesia and brought the kid back with them.
Simple and no convoluted constructions.

I do not agree. I see no evidence that Stanley Ann ever lost custody of Barry or any reason why she would. Dual (triple?) citizen children went back and forth between countries a lot without the parents being forced to change custody, it seems.
Something related to custody and/or nationality likely happened in December 1971, but it has been deliberately withheld from public scrutiny.
My best guess now is that it has to do with Senior bringing to Hawaii the paperwork to formally register Barry as a citizen of the relatively newly independent country of Kenya. This would not remove his US citizenship or possible prior Indonesian citizenship, but formalize his additional available Kenyan citizenship, something that Sr. may not have done for his American while he was carrying on with Ruth Baker.
He had broken up with her by December 1971, IIRC. Ruth was raising her sons Jewish and the sons took the name of her new husband, Ndesand, so perhaps the extremely egotistical and status conscious BHO Sr. decided to get interested in BHO II.
