i know (personally) of no such person, who was IN the cell-block. period. end of story.
was "Father Boyle" a ROMAN CATHOLIC priest??? (CPT Wirz, being a devout Catholic, would NOT have given his confession to anyone other than a RC priest.)
laughing AT you.

Schade identifies Boyle as Wirz's confessor in his letter to Davis. From The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, page 498. "On the night previous to the execution of the prisoner, some parties came to the confessor of Wirz (Rev. Father Boyle) and also to me " He must be lying, huh, and Jefferson just a dupe to believe him, right?
The True Story of Andersonville Prison: A Defense of Major Henry Wirz published in 1908, says on page 218:
The next day after the interview with his attorney, Major Wirz being a Roman Catholic, requested permission to send for a priest of that faith. His jailors readily assented, and the Rev. F.E. Boyle waited upon Major Wirz in his cell. At the request of Father Boyle the soldier in attendance stepped one side.Every movement and turn of the prisoner was reported and dilated upon and embellished by the press. Nothing was spoilt in the telling, and the (page 219) fact that Major Wirz sent for a Roman Catholic priest was heralded throughout the country.(...)
(pages 227-228) On the morning of November 10, Major Henry Wirz received the last rites of his church. He told Father Boyle that he forgave his enemies. He made his peace with God, and when the officer who had charge of the execution came to notify him that the time had come, Wirz responded, "I am ready, sir," and in the presence of Father Boyle, mounted the steps leading to the scaffold. He met his death without a tremor, like the brave man that he was"
All a pack of lies, huh?
But it has to be one or the other, right? You say that there was no Catholic priest. Multiple sources say that there was. So for you to be right, all those sources, from Wirz's lawyer to Jefferson Davis on down must be wrong. Both versions can't be correct, and for Schade to be that wrong, it must be an out and out lie, right?
