And the Brits conducted the so-called carpet bombing because, contrary to popular legend, the Norton Bombsight couldn’t put a bomb in a pickle barrel at 20,000 feet. At least it couldn’t at night, and they conducted their raids at night to protect the crews.

I get sick and tired of people attacking the allies tactics at this late date when we didn’t ask for that damn war, we didn’t start it, we just finished it.

Take the atomic bombings. Those bombs saved four million Japanese lives. People always point to the million of ours it saved from being lost in an invasion. I would submit we would have had to kill 4X the number of japs to get the job done so it was for their benefit too.

War is like in infected tooth. There’s no easier softer way, you just have to get in there and yank it.

At a minimum, 4X the number. And that was if everything went perfectly. I think the more likely numbers were somewhere in the range 2 million allied casualties and tens of millions of japanese casualties. Given that they were intending to fight to the last man, woman, and child it's not inconceivable to think that an invasion of Japan could've ended their civilization.
