Toddler Dies After Hooters Mom Forgets Child in Hot Car
Fox News ^ | October 31, 2007

PHOENIX — The mother of a 17-month-old boy found dead after he was left unattended inside a hot car for at least seven hours in a north Phoenix Hooters restaurant was arrested on one felony count of negligent homicide.

Police say the woman, Ashly Duchene, 22, left her son in her car when she arrived at the north Phoenix Hooters restaurant where she works at about 10 a.m. Tuesday. When she returned to the car after her shift at nearly 5 p.m., her son was dead.

Efforts to revive the boy by witnesses, officers and firefighters were unsuccessful. Police Sgt. Joel Tranter said temperatures hit nearly 90 degrees Tuesday, but that it would have been more than 100 degrees inside the car.

FOX 10 Phoenix reports the baby's mother had planned to drop the child off at childcare before heading to work at a restaurant near Bell Road and Interstate 17.

Instead, authorities say the mother went to work with the child still inside the car.

The baby was in a car seat in the backseat of a Honda Civic, which had very dark tinted windows. Officials believe that made him unnoticable to people going in and out of the restaurant and a car wash next door, the Republic reported.

It's unknown if the mother will face any charges in the child's death. Tranter said situations like this are handled "on a case-by-case basis."

So far, there have been no arrests.

I read that statement and took it in consideration and mentioned it in my post. I stand by my statement. Please do not resort to namecalling unless it is to my face.

Yeah, too bad management pays more attention to the servers than the food.

Ah....they can arm chair judge my daughter all they want. They can pull out any biblical quotes they want. They just need to keep in my one of my favorites:

Judge not, lest ye be judged.

And one also has to keep in mind....we are only treated the way we allow people to treat us. My daughter is not being degraded. She has learned to respect people on their merit, and vice versa. Respect is something that is earned, not given on the credit system. How one carries themselves and expresses themselves, whether in a face to face meeting or in written word speaks volumes on their character.

Oh, and to the person that posted about their mother raising 3 kids on her own without having to stoop to the level of a Hooters girl....I am truly happy that everything turned out well for you and your family. My mother raised 5 of us by herself. And no, she was not a stripper. Most mothers do have the “mother bear” gene and always put their kids first. I commend that.

But....as far as my daughter mowing yards, cleaning houses, etc to make some extra cash vs the Hooters thing.... She is displaced is a very large city, far from home where she knows no one. Door to door with a lawn mower is not practical nor is it/was it EVER an option.

Yeah, sometimes he needs buns.

Seriously, my feeling is simple. If you’re going to do something, even serve food, then do it well.

You are a genuine lady. LowOil’s mother obviously did not succeed as well as you have with your daughter.

Your daughter should take the basic wait staff skills she leaned at Hooters and get a job in a real restaurant. I promise you, she’ll make more in tips.

She has already said her daughter has managed a steak house while going to school. She took the best job she could find closest to her son in the ICU in the least time possible spent looking for one.

She should start putting out applications. The kid won’t be in ICU forever.

For the record, I have no moral objections to the way Hooters dresses the wait staff. It’s the crappy food that offends me.

They gave the principle who did the same thing a pass a few months ago and she was educated.

All I know is that is against my principles to eat at Hooters and it is also against my principles to lock a baby in a car to bake to death.

I pray that it isn't and that it leaves in good health.

Please see all of my posts before commenting. She will NOT be staying up there long term. She has a full time position at a nursing home back here at home waiting for her. Hooters understands that she may have to leave in a moments notice if need be to head back over to the hospital. Not sure how many employers would be so understanding. Anyway...

I hope you are right on the NICU comment. I wait until the day we can bring that precious little baby home. So far, he’s made it over two months and has amazed all his doctors. He now weighs in at a whopping 3 pounds.

Sounds like he’s in “feed and grow” mode. I’ve been in NICUs. They do amazing things these days.
