PHOENIX — The mother of a 17-month-old boy found dead after he was left unattended inside a hot car for at least seven hours in a north Phoenix Hooters restaurant was arrested on one felony count of negligent homicide.
Police say the woman, Ashly Duchene, 22, left her son in her car when she arrived at the north Phoenix Hooters restaurant where she works at about 10 a.m. Tuesday. When she returned to the car after her shift at nearly 5 p.m., her son was dead.
Efforts to revive the boy by witnesses, officers and firefighters were unsuccessful. Police Sgt. Joel Tranter said temperatures hit nearly 90 degrees Tuesday, but that it would have been more than 100 degrees inside the car.
FOX 10 Phoenix reports the baby's mother had planned to drop the child off at childcare before heading to work at a restaurant near Bell Road and Interstate 17.
Instead, authorities say the mother went to work with the child still inside the car.

The baby was in a car seat in the backseat of a Honda Civic, which had very dark tinted windows. Officials believe that made him unnoticable to people going in and out of the restaurant and a car wash next door, the Republic reported.
It's unknown if the mother will face any charges in the child's death. Tranter said situations like this are handled "on a case-by-case basis."
So far, there have been no arrests.

You were assailing someone in #214 to which I asked if it were me. And, I guess you’re not done.
I realize the tragedy inflicted on this child has most of us really upset and I’m not interested in having to defend my comments regarding abused children and those charged with caring for them whether that’s the parents, grandparents, or both.

It’s an exaggerated example, but it’s not a red herring. The young women at Hooters do not dress in conservative clothing and the primary allure at Hooters’ is not the beef. Have you surveyed the Hooters’ calendar babes? It’s quite provocative. When it involves paying the bills, many young women resort to do things that are beneath their values, but do so because they feel it’s necessary like stripping for college tuition.
I really don’t care if someone’s stripping, flipping burgers, or bearing cleavage while serving brew and beef. The exploitation of women is a subjective issue and if the not-so-righteous are telling the righteous how righteous to be - so be it. I guess everybody ends up casting stones.
This tragedy with the child is so overwhelming it feels personal and here we are, unable to do anything to save the child and the mother. The child is dead and the young mother suffers eternally.
“Overt displays of prepubescent sexuality”??? What do you think goes on in a Hooters, anyway?? You must have seen that South Park cartoon that parodied Hooters with 8-yr olds. It’s a restaurant. The waitresses wear t-shirts and shorts. They have to be 21 to serve drinks. And the woman you’re bad-mouthing said her daughter worked at Hooters and had a child in the hospital. And that makes you feel all tough and self-righteous? I hope you don’t claim to be a Christian, because Christ wouldn’t have your attitude. Give yourself a break and pull your head out.
This is my last post on this thread. A small child is dead, and the mother has been charged with negligent homicide, which sounds fitting, as long as she gets probation, and not prison. She’s already facing a lifetime of punishment from her own memories, and if she’s really as bad a person as some prudes here seem to think, prison won’t help her anyway. I just can’t understand how the topic got changed to where she works instead of what she did. My opinion of FR went down a little more tonight.
Very key words...it's a wonder it doesn't happen more often! Perhaps the law should be changed to mandate car seats in FRONT seat (backwards with air bags turned off)!

The article does not adequately explain why the mother forgot about her child. So, posters fill in the blanks with various ugly fantasies.

TE, I think its just that he can’t make sense of what he is saying. Kind of like he is spinning now. I never brought up ADD until he did...He may just be very confused by all this Hooter’s talk. However it is very sad a child was left to die by a mother in a car. So she worked at a Hooters...Would it make a difference if she had been in college & forgot the child? People need more common sense IMHO. ~Pandy~
