Well... to my mind, Ginny was a natural choice for Harry. But, I agree she did just sort of "pop up" as his romantic interest in HBP. But then, sometimes it happens that way... one day you look at the girl who's always been there and realize that she's the one.

Ginny was a natural choice for Harry. Ginny had a crush on Harry early on. She tried to flush Riddle's diary to get rid of it but was entrapped by it and Harry saved her from the snake. Was that Chamber of Secrets?

Ginny was a natural choice for Harry. Of course -- what's his reward for his suffering? To truly be part of a family. Marrying into the Weasley family is the only fitting reward for his labors.
