We TiVo'd a British Invasion special off PBS last week. It's fund drive season so fast forward is a blessed thing. LuLu sang To Sir. It was excellent. I loved her personality as an AI coach. She seems like the kind of gal I could be friends with. I bet shopping with her is a riot.
So is wearing skimpy clothes, or deep v necks and no bra, or a dress slit to the waist!

He came a long way from the beginning of last season where I thought he looked like the leprechaun from Lucky Charms cereal.

Maybe that's why he calls it his secret blog and says he's not supposed to be doing it. He has pictures of his wife and the slide show has some good captions. I think its legit.
I think he's dated a couple of different models.
Overall, the show was good. Not too much strange banter between Ryan and Simon, which is getting old. Lulu was terrific. The girls that didn't pay attention to her really suffered for it (LaKisha). The theme of the week helped enormously, since "British Invasion One" songs were generally well-crafted and full of hooks. Unfortunately, some great songs were ignored (or couldn't be cleared).
Haley: Good song choice for her. Fluffy and light, not too difficult. She looked great and her shoes were to die for. She's safe, mostly due to the bounce factor and those cute short-shorts.
Chris R.: I liked his song and his performance. I like his voice and the way he pronounces his "r"s at the ends of words. He was one of my favorites tonight. He is perfectly on pitch, and a little nasal, which I love. See, I'm not scared of all of you!!
Stephanie: I like her, but the song was one of those she should have sung EXACTLY the way it was written. She tried to deviate off the melody a few times and it did not work. It sounded mostly out of tune and frankly, neglected. She's my alternate choice for leaving.
Blake: I would have enjoyed this more if I could have imagined him singing this to a woman. But, alas, I could not. There were a few moments when I wished he would have let his voice soar, but he's just not capable of it. In fact, his voice is very weak. HE'S the one who is very breathy, IMO. And he looks like he walks around with a sh*t-eating, pompous grin on his face all the time. Creeeepy.
LaKisha: I had to agree with Simon on the looks thing, especially the hair. She should have been very sleek. Oh well. Worst song choice of the night (please, a James Bond theme?). She's got to do something about the fingernails. They will soon be starring in a double bill with Barbra Streisand's showy nails. "Nail Wars" or something... She sang well, but it was boring and didn't make any sense. Maybe she knew that she could wear the diamonds, and that's why she chose the song....??? I know I would!!
Phil: He's trying too hard. Way, way over the top. It was frantic. Like he was desperate to make an impression so he went way too far. He's my choice for elimination this week. I think he has a nice voice, but he never quite got a handle on it.
Jordin: What a great song. I'd never heard it and really liked her interpretation. A tremendous choice, because she has been doing all these Disney songs; this one showed she can pour despair all over the stage as well as she does the syrup. Interesting choice and brilliant performance. She has a lovely tone to her voice that makes you want to keep listening. And she gets prettier by the week. Nice!
Sanjaya: This guy(?) is such a joke. But he saved himself with that performance. At least he didn't look like the title character from "Weekend at Bernie's". Horrible singing, but he looked great, if you're a pre-pubescent girl, which none of us are, right? Speaking of which, the Ashley thing was one of the worst moments in AI history. To show her once, okay. To show her twice, not so cute. Constantly revisiting that wretched scene? Unforgivable.
Gina: I really thought this was the worst overall performance of the night. She was about as desperate looking as Phil. Why couldn't she have watched old film of Mick Jagger over and over until she had him down pat, physically? She strolled around too much, and doesn't have the fitness to be able to handle that. Also, did anyone else notice that she sang, "paint it bla" the whole song? Does that tongue mutilation prevent her from saying the "ck"? Yikes. Paint her gone.
Chris S.: Again, someone who is not in tip-top shape should never move around too much. He was visibly winded at the end of the song. Trying too hard. I didn't like the hand-slapping at the beginning, especially since he made no eye contact with the audience while he was doing it. He stared straight into the camera the whole time. Weird. Middle of the pack for me.
Melinda: I noticed that her song must have been cut for time constraints, since hers was much shorter than everyone else's. Maybe that's why she gets the pimp spot so often--only pros can handle that at the last minute (can you imagine how flustered Haley or Sanjaya would be if they made them take a verse out?). Anyway, I didn't like the song, but she sang it well, of course. I'm getting a little bored by her song choices. And her hair was not good. She needs a little height on top so her head looks lifted off her shoulders. She was just awright for me tonight, dawg.

I'm stunned at how many of you actually use the contestants' real names. In the Scoutmaster household, that is forbidden.
For those of you keeping score at home, Phil is Bat Boy, from the Weekly World News. Middle Child, having Googled a photo of Bat Boy, showed it to Youngest Child, who earnestly asked with utter confusion, "is that Phil?"
Our favorite contestant Melinda is, of course, Shampoo. If you don't automatically pick up on the Head & Shoulders reference, then shame on you.
Blake is Jiffy Pop, dating to the night he wore the crinkly silver metallic poofy hip-hop hat that looked EXACTLY like an upside down version of a Jiffy Pop container after you've popped it. Oldest Child called him Tourette's for a while, based on the beat box bit, but rest of family thought that was inappropriate (although, from time to time, funny).
Chris Sligh is, with a nod to the Simpsons and reference to his out of control hair, Slighdeshow Bob.
Sanjaya's nicknames? Well, that would be cruel.

I was not the guy Sundance said thought he'd win it all. I never felt I would. I still don't. I will try to be myself and do my best; but I believe one of the three above will win it all. I believe that Jordin will be your next American Idol. I'm just keeping it real. (Although if the three split the diva votes, then I don't mind coming in first ... just a thought.)

Hmmm. A random flip back through shows that Middle Child is not the only person who sees the Bat Boy resemblance.
I attended Asa Mercer Junior High School in Seattle -- Asa Mercer is the man who actually brought the "brides" to Seattle (not Jason, Joshua, and Jeremy Bolt).
My understanding then and now is that, instead of a freshly bathed and coiffed boatload of brides, Asa Mercer brought prostitutes, pickpockets, and other thieves from New England, who were given a choice of Seattle or jail. Of course, the random gold-digger or old maid (you know, an unmarried 22-year old with a pork chop tied around her neck) probably accompanied them.
Nothing says true love and lasting bonds of matrimony like unwashed miners standing on a wharf, waving sacks of gold dust, bidding for the attention of hookers. But, then again, I'm a romantic at heart.
And Casandra, my third-grade girlfriend, if you're out there reading? I'd like to state for the record that YOUR great-grandmother was probably a beauty queen who accompanied the other women on the voyage to teach them poise and etiquette.
He may be right. I thought she was the best last night. I still like Melinda & Lakisha is disappointing so far. She should have listened to Lulu. If not for the lack of really good contestants in this seasons lineup I think she would be in the bottom 3 tonight. There are just too many competing for that right now.
I agree about Chris Sligh. His voice is mediocre, but his ego is humongous. A thoroughly dislikable character.
Last night, I prayed when he was bouncing up and down the aisles that Shamu in a Curly Wig would not trip and fall down on a small child.
