My concern is basically based on the potential for this issue to split the ranks.The "ranks" are already split; they're split between those who will support the GOP candidate, whoever it might be, and the ones who won't.

Political ranks are always split to some degree. The question is to what degree are they split? The only concern now ought to be: Is the schism fatal or can things be duct taped together in the time remaining until Nov. 2008?
I agree that there has to be some give. All or nothing types usually end up with nothing. And while I enjoy a little repartee and badinage as much as the next person, at some point we have to find a leader who will give as many as possible a chance to jump on to his/her wagon- or the whole thing is moot. I'm still looking for that candidate.
