These people are selected from a zillion outside in the rain? I never understood how it worked.

They usually have an open audition at a stadium some where--a place that can hold thousands of people. And they all audition for the shows producers.

Whoever is the best, most interesting, or the worst is picked to go audition in front of Randy, Simon and Paula.

Another question: Say they pick too many from the mediocre and then at the end find some great talent? Is there a limit?
