I had a coworker whose relative went to Hollywood. He said that they did a first audition for some people (producers?) at the big 10,000 people gathering. The most talented/best for TV (read: freaky freakys) were chosen to audition for Simon, Randy and Paula.
That's what I thought. I guess they have to let some weirdos in for the humor aspect.
