I've never lived in Virginia, I didn't know that. CNN's exit poll data called it VOTE BY PARTY ID which sounded similar to me.

Then it would have to be by self-identification, what someone in an exit poll considered themselves to be, because we do not register by party. We just register. I like it that way. :)
