Ex-border agents sentenced for shooting smuggler
AP

EL PASO, Texas -- Two former U.S. Border Patrol agents were each sentenced Thursday to more than a decade in federal prison for shooting a Mexican drug smuggler and then trying to cover it up.

Ignacio Ramos was sentenced to 11 years and one day, and Jose Alonso Compean was sentenced to 12 years. Both were fired after their convictions on several charges including assault with a deadly weapon, obstruction of justice, and a civil rights violation.

The men, neither of whom spoke in court, will be allowed to turn themselves in Jan. 17.

The agents have proclaimed their innocence in the Feb. 17, 2005, shooting of admitted drug smuggler Osvlado Aldrete Davila.

Aldrete was shot in the buttocks as he fled across the Rio Grande into Mexico after a confrontation with Ramos and Compean. The agents said they shot in self defense, but prosecutors charged that they had no reason to shoot at the fleeing man, who later claimed he was unarmed.

Since their convictions, support for the agents has swelled. Several prominent law makers, including U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner, the Wisconsin Republican who chairs the House judiciary committee, have even called for a Congressional investigation into the agents' prosecutions.

The union representing most rank and file Border Patrol agents established a legal defense fund. And civilian border watch groups have asked the U.S. Attorney General's office to review the case and throw out the jury's guilty verdicts.

Just a minor technicality, but our jury system does not require "peers".

Here we come to a question of supervision ~ initial writeups may be in error. It's part of a supervisor's job anywhere to assist in correcting those errors.

In this case it sounds like the supervisor actually appeared in court AGAINST his subordinates ~ which is sure a strange place for a supervisor to go to correct any problems he should have corrected earlier.

If every government employee (cop, auditor, regulator, etc.) were expected to be perfect first time out on every report up the chain of command, and when they weren't that we simply prosecuted them for felonies, we wouldn't have any government employees ~ NOR CONTRACTORS GREED BALLS ~

Truck drivers carrying any load over $50,000 in value of ANYTHING will carry GUNS, not just a gun.

He was trapped and carrying his guns with him to get over the border.

Who are the investigators who believed his story that he wasn't armed? They are so stupid. May I encourage them to hang around a major truckstop/truck terminal overnight.

Most those bad boys look pretty Southern European and North African to me. Could be wrong, but Mexico's history says that's where they came from.

What is the explanation?

I'll take "wire transfers to Latin America" for $45 billion, Alex.

Cheap lawn care, cheap chicken processing. Who wins with that? Do you?

Not me. Some dinky village in Mexico is watching soccer on a big screen HDTV, though .... And then, there are all those U.S. politicians enjoying daily visits from American corporate and Mexican lobbyists...

Seriously though, daguberment, now that we cleared up our misunderstanding, the CFR and others have actually stated IN WRITING that the open border facilitates a sort of international socialism. It's a de facto way of equalizing the economic status of Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, et al with the USA.

...while Lynn Stewart, who worked with her terrorist client to threaten the safety of US citizens, got 28 months in a Club Fed and a kiss on the lips from the sentencing judge for her "service to the poor."
Honestly, why do decent people not revolt at these horrible miscarriages of justice by federal judges all over this country? Who appointed the turkey judge in Texas who sentenced these BP agents for shooting a drug dealer in the butt?

America today no longer deals from it's position of strenth, usually opting to make endless deals and concessions which are equivilent to the proverbial "Death of a Thousand Cuts".

You are right. Ever since the forming of the U.N..........but that is for another thread.

I remember thinkling that Janet Reno had too much power. However, I do believe that Alberto Gonzales has displaced her. I am having problems with the U.S. Department of Justice going into Mexico and retaining a drug smuggler and giving him immunity for the sole purpose of testifying against the Border Patrol agents. Now he is suing for $5 million. D@mn, just d@mn. These guys got 10 years in the pen. D@mn, double d@mn.

Supervisors who have been lied to can get a wee bit...peevish. Nay, snippy. Verily, even a touch...testy.

Citizens who see our government in the person of the US Attorney seemingly working for the cartels and foreign governments can get a "wee bit peevish. Nay, snippy. Verily even a touch...testy."

It is a fact we need somebody who is not biased for Mexico. To go down into Mexico and look for a drug smuggler and give him immunity is unreal. So these guys get 10 years each for "obstruction of justice" and Clinton didn't get any time for "obstruction of justice".

Are we so stupid to think a drug smuggler would even think about telling the truth?

I don't know how many times I have read on FR .......

Vote Republican for the judges, for the judges, for the judges, for the judges, for the judges, for the jud..........

This case kind of blows that argument about why we all MUST vote Republican straight out into the manure pile. Any more Bush appointed judges like this bitch and we'll all be speaking Arabic, Chinese and Spanish. English will be the 4th language spoken.
