The following is the complete text of Mel Gibson's statement regarding his arrest for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol:
"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the L.A. County sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.
"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.
"Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.
"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
And using that kind of language to a lady does the same to me.
You are right but problem is that when people are drunk and they say thing they regret when they are sober, they realize that what they said drunk was exactly what they mean but don't have the ability to self censor themselves. If Mel did say the things he did about Jews, it was because he really deep down believes it and the alcohol allowed him to stop his internal self censoring. It might not hurt him hollywood, but he just might have lost a huge chunk of his audience who now see him as a jew hater. I originally didn't think he was a jew hater (as was put forth during the filming and showing of Passion of the Christ. I didn't think the movie was hateful towards Jews, being Jewish myself) but after reading what he supposedly said to the officer, he absolutely is an anti semite. If you really want to know how people think, get them drunk and let them talk. Mel just gave up his hidden hand.
..but I see your point, Crusader..
I don't, don't don't believe him anti-Semitic.....not at all.
But the vicous vile words spewing out of some mouths here is mind boggling to me.
Mind boggling!
Good mercy folks.....we get 2nd chances, by the grace of God.
This guy apologized......for his actions, for his words.
I believe him.
And before you call me anti-Semitic.......well,don't even think about it!!!!!!!!!!!
Good mercy........some folks here are really fast and furious to play the You're anti-Semitic card.
That's unconscionable!
Well putting Mel aside for a minute...I am a Christian and I agree with the Jews!!! I find something antisemitic in the gospels. I do. I think the gospels are anti-Jewish. I have from the time I was first exposed to them as a kid in grade school. This is not to say I was taught to be antisemitic by my teachers. Not at all. I never once had an anti-semitic teacher. It was just the New Testament stories especially the preachings of St. Paul seem awfully hard on Jews. And I remember as clear as a bell mentally resisting what was said about the Jews in the New Testament. I disagreed with it and I felt that I sould not disagree with the bible. But I did. Because the New Testament in young mind was mean to the Jews and I did not think it was right.
Many of the Gospels were edited hundreds of years after Jesus lived, with the idea of discrediting the Jews, who were rivals with the Christians.
One of the first things they did was to change the Sabbath to Sunday, as a sop to the Roman Priests whose traditional worship day was Sunday .
What are you talking about?
This crap seems to rise up during islamic agitation.
BEING DRUNK IS NOT AN EXCUSE...
It takes a good person - man or woman - to apologize. To humble him- or her-self. Who amongst us is able to humble ourselves and apologize for our mistakes first....?
Mel is NOT a Conservative. He came out against Bush viciously.
How about Christ himself? He offered a sometimes scathing critique of the practices of the Jewish sects of his day. Was he an anti-semite?
It is not necessary here.
"This just really angers me" would convey the same sentiment.
Great excuse: "Everybody does it."
Well I don't know about the Gospels being edited hundreds of years later, but I do know the Jews and Christians were rivals for converts. I think that actually this rivalry was not really understood until recently and I also think that when New Testament scholars started actually working with Jewish scholars and getting their help on exegesis there has been a more favorable understanding about the Jews of the New Testament.
You think the MSM won't mark him as a conservative in upcoming wall-to-wall coverage of this? They're gonna put him up as the new poster boy of the anti-war movement and do a big expose of the anti-semitic currents at work in progressive politics?
Don't count on it.
Well, there's an element of truth in what you just wrote...I'll give that to you.
Okey dokey: "The report says Gibson then launched into a barrage of anti-Semitic statements: "F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?"
Any more questions?
He is powerless over alcohol, and his life immediately became unmanageable.
Thanks for this, Laz. No need for those of us who are not perfect to pile on.
One day at a time, Mel. If neccessary, take it 1 hour, or 1 minute at a time. If it's 1 minute, I hope you still have a sponser. Turn it over to your Higher Power. You know He will help you, and forgive you.
Remember that there is no pain in this world that a drink will not make worse. And one drink is never enough...
I don't know...we'll see...the MSM is between a rock and a hard place on this one.
