The following is the complete text of Mel Gibson's statement regarding his arrest for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol:
"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the L.A. County sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.
"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.
"Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.
"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
"Pat Buchanan is cursing God right now for not making him sexy...."
Something about nobody riding to the sounds of his buns.
Yes it was rude and your screen name is "mel" hmmmmm Mr. Gibson is that you?
Don't let the thread ruin your evening & have a nice remaining weekend! :o)
I am not an alcoholic and I have never drank much at all, but i talked with my husband, who has been recovering for 7 years and spent MANY more than that as an avid practicing alcoholic.
I was wondering how .12 would affect an alcoholic so severely. I doubt it and so does he. Perhaps there was something else in his system????
They were criticized for a day. So yea, I was wrong. I'm right on the rest of it.
Well, it is hard to imagine what people would really say or do if they weren't inhibited by what society has deemed to be socially acceptable and what is hate speach.
It is too simplistic and naive to assume that what happened in many European countries over the centuries could never happen here. It was only 70 years ago that we North Americans sent shiploads of Jews fleeing European countries back to the Nazi death camps.
I'm sure that could never happen again.../sarc
This is actually quite a sincere and proper apology, IMHO.
S2R, why were you so quick to criticize when you didn't know what was going on? That's not like you.
I don't think we should do anything to him. The police need to, but we don't.
I think he should get what anyone else would get, first offense.
Don't enable him.
That doesn't mean I should excuse that kind of behavior. It's disgusting behavior, but we all make our own decisions of how much or little esteem we hold him.
I hold him in very low esteem, but not because he got a DUI, but because of what he said. Put it this way, if i got drunk tonight, I would still not say those things, it's just not in my mind, but it's in his. That's why i hold him in low, LOW esteem.
You were wrong on all of it until you shifted the goalposts.
It's called reverse tolerance and is common in older alcoholics with reduced metabolism and/or liver damage.
You cannot drink like a 22 year old when your a 50 year old chronic alcoholic.
And that has what to do with this situation?????
That's Gibson's fault, not ours.
No I wasn't.
I agree with Lovergirl. Leftists who make anti-semtic, or bigoted remarks may be criticised (on page A29), but they rarely lose their jobs or status. You're not arguing the same standard applies to conservatives, are you?
FWIW, I apologized to you.
I wish more Freepers felt the way you do.
Bump. :-)
I didn't think the news about Gibson's horrific comments were out when we playing on this thread. I just checked Google News and You're right, that news wasn't out at the time.
Oh that makes sense, since he's "tormented", don't mind anything he does or says. Of course.
:D
