In Germany in 1986, I shared an office with a distinguished Polish professor, who later became Rector of his university, after the overthrow of communism(Catholic, of course, as was I). A refined, subtle, and educated man. One evening, in all seriousness, he told me what Jews do to Christian babies at Passover. I was in total disbelief. It was if something bizarre and ugly from the Middle Ages had just appeared on my desk.

Anyone who thinks Nazi antisemitism in the 1930s was anything other than a reflection of popular sentiment, is in denial. In school, in the 1970's, an old Christian Brother taught us how Jews, communists and freemasons were in cahoots to destroy Christianity and bring the Antichrist to Earth. Antisemitism was promoted, preached, and implemented by both Catholics and Protestants; and after WWI, when Germany was looking to blame someone for the consequences of their own actions, Jews were the obvious scapegoats. The Nazis came to power by a combination of popular vote, and the complicity of van Papen of the Catholic party. But they're in denial.
