I'm glad you posted this. I think Gov Bush is trying to raise the bar here, by making this debate more of a civil discourse, instead of the trashing of one group of people against another. BTW, I all for protecting our borders, and I don't want to see wages fall. However, I am not convinced the answer is as some have suggested, to lock up 13 million people in jail.

Also from the article:

"Columba and I watch the news early in the morning and in the evenings," Bush wrote in the late-night e-mail exchange. "The cumulative effect of the coverage is that immigrants are bad and hurting our country. The coverage is black and white, good and bad, without the nuances that the coverage deserves."

The Florida governor has said he does not intend to run for president in 2008. But he has been mentioned as a potential running mate for another likely candidate, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

In his e-mail, Gov. Bush endorsed the idea of a broad guest-worker program encompassing the kinds of low-wage workers sought by farms and factories as well as high-tech professionals from places such as India.

..."The focus should be on protecting our borders rather than these piling on provisions that are punitive to many who have made a great contribution to our country," he wrote. "Along with that, the focus should be on a guest worker program and a means to deal with the millions of long term undocumented workers….

"Frankly," he added, "I also believe we should open up legal immigration to the qualified scientists, innovators, entrepreneurs and others who can additionally add value to our great country."

The cumulative effect of the coverage is that immigrants are bad and hurting our country.

This is the shit I have been talking about that is infuriating me. The Republican proponents of illegal immigration refuse to call it what it is. They keep referring to it an "anti immigrant" issue when they know full well that that is not the case. Conservatives have fought the libs for years who use the exact same tactics. Do the Republicans think we can't recognize it when it comes from our own?

I don't think I know of anyone who wants to put illegals in jail, they want them deported and while we're at it, lets deport the 29% of federal prisoners who are illegals also (of course we need the wall built first and the Mexican gov't notified they are getting some criminals back).

Actually doing it may not be feasible - but I think you need to convince those 13 million that they might become one of the subset who DO get locked up, or you have no deterrents against breaking the law. I just don't think a fine is enough of a deterrent, since they pay coyotes more than that to get here.

There shouldn't be any need to do so..

Include in legislation a paragraph that states all illegals have say, 6 months to return to their country of origin and apply for a green card...
State in the legislation that after that "grace period" ends, any illegals caught in the U.S. will be fined and deported.. And permanently Denied citizenship..
Offenders will be forever barred from entering the U.S. under any circumstances, and applications for work, citizenship status, visits, etc.. will be denied..

Want to give them a little more time?
Make the grace period one year..
Illegals will have a choice.
They can stay, and get permanently deported and barred..
They can return home at their own expense, and apply for legal entry..
Simple..

We (the U.S.) could even expidite the process, and/or raise immigration quotas from Mexico, Central and South American countries..
Just make sure that it's understood, legal entry and compliance with the laws are everything, and failure to comply will mean permanent denial and hard time for violators..

I guarantee that "most" illegals would return home before the deadline and start paperwork for re-entry..

We have ignored this problem for too long..
Now it is going to cost us "mucho dinero", and require massive amounts of manpower and time to correct it..
I would bet we'll still be apprehending illegals a decade from now, but if we do the right thing, it will be a very few...

No shit Jeb, stupid me, I must have missed your little nuance of not differentiating betwixt "LEGAL" and "ILLEGAL" immigrants.

Stupid jerk off, these pols make me physically ill.

Do you not see that he mentions immigrants, not illegal aliens? I'm sorry, but I'm not so stupid to think that he doesn't know the difference. This attempted blurring of the issues is not accidental.

Yet another Bush bot globalists chimes in....

Illegal aliens and their off spring should all be expelled. The only non-citizens in this country must come through official ports of entry and have proper work visas.

All non-citizens should be denied any and all social services and benefits. All children or minors of non-citizens must not be allowed to attend our public schools unless they pay full tuition to the state.

All dependents of non-citizens must be the sole responsibility of the work visa holder.

All non-citizens must pay the full boat load of taxes and do not gain eligibility to SS unless they are so lucky as to be granted citizenship.

I am sick of this crap. We have had official procedures in place to gain legal entry and to apply for citizenship.

The Bush apologists want to undermine that process and THAT is a slap in the face to all those who have followed the rules.

NO AMNESTY, NO RESIDENCY...EVER FOR THE ILLEGALS NOW HERE

This is a recent letter I sent to my Senator.

Senator Ensign,

Regarding a border fence. I think this is something that we must have in place as soon as possible. One doesn't start mopping the floors until the water leak has been repaired or the water shut off.

I believe that if we had a program that harshly hits the employers who hire illegals we could accomplish the self removal in 50 months without too much ruckus. Pass a Bill that required the employers, one state at a time, to verify the SSI numbers of their employees. We must verify that these employees are paying taxes. Any problem and the employee has 30 days to bring in alternate proof that they were not attempting fraud.

Start in the Northeast. state#1 Maine, state#2 New Hampshire, state#3 Vermont and state#4 Mass., should be the first four states in the numerical order. Then state#5 RI., state#6 NY., state#7 CT., and state#8 NJ., in the numerical order.

Do you understand what I am proposing and what the effect would be? The illegal employees would rapidly see what is coming. Knowing that they couldn't produce verifiable tax identification they would start selling their belongings and shipping the items that they wished to retain back to their home countries.

The illegals from South America and Mexico would start moving West as their jobs disappeared on their own. As new jobs became impossible to attain they would see that Canada, Russia, Mexico or wherever their foreign homeland is should become their destination for employment.

Employers who couldn't find American workers could appeal to the proper Agency for a 24 month Guest Worker permit for specific named employees. This identification would be given to the employee at our border entry station as they apply for an Entry Card and permit this employee to work for just the one employer. Perhaps require the employer to send in verification that the employee is still needed and that he is will be working on site.

Once we have this system in place, then we could have the local police and ICE agents collect the rest of the illegals and deport them city by city across the United States. As each state comes up for it's 'clean up' I would favor a $10,000 fine for hiring a person in that state who isn't a US citizen or someone who doesn't have a Guest Worker identification card. That state should expel all students who aren't citizens, here on student visas or the children of authorized workers also.

We cannot afford to pay the costs of these people if they are not going to learn to speak English and assimilate into our communities. Their costs are much higher than their contributions. We could have a public award system for anyone patriotically turning in the names of unauthorized immigrants who are their neighbors. Perhaps have a portion of the money go to the local hospitals, police forces or school systems

Senator, I thank you for taking the time to read my ideas.

Sincerely,

"without the nuances" ? ? ? ? ? ?

Summer,

Didn't the S'Kerry One use "Nuances" as an excuse for political baffle-gab.

Just wondering.
