WASHINGTON Accusing politicians of "pounding their chests" on immigration for short-term political gain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the tone of the debate had been "hurtful" to him and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.
Bush, the younger brother of President Bush, reserved some of his sharpest criticism for conservatives in his own Republican Party, calling it "just plain wrong" to charge illegal immigrants with a felony, as a provision passed by the Republican-led House would do. He also opposed "penalizing the children of illegal immigrants" by denying them U.S. citizenship, an idea backed by some conservatives but not included in the legislation.
"My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad," the Florida governor wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times.

When I was canvassing door to door in summer 2004, for the Bush/Cheney campaign, I came across some registered Republicans already "disaffected" from/by the Bush presidency.
In fact, I won't even repeat the disaffected comments of one of them!
"Yep. Meaning that certain terms can be disallowed by the management. However, note that the terms "traitor" and "treason" are still to be found on FR, in posts that haven't been deleted. Same for "bushbot".
"
You're correct. It's a public forum. I voiced my dislike for the use of "traitor" when applied to our President. Posts containing those references remain in the thread. It's Jim Robinson's site. He gets to make the decision, and I abide by his decision. That does not mean that I will not object to such in the future.
You see, I know who owns this site, and it's not me. I say my piece, but Jim Robinson makes the decisions. That's how it works.
For once, gridlock in congress is a plus.
I think what is more hurtful are the comments that I am hearing in reference to our beloved President and family. We can disagree with his policies, but he is still our President and deserves our respect and loyalty.
