WASHINGTON — Accusing politicians of "pounding their chests" on immigration for short-term political gain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the tone of the debate had been "hurtful" to him and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.

Bush, the younger brother of President Bush, reserved some of his sharpest criticism for conservatives in his own Republican Party, calling it "just plain wrong" to charge illegal immigrants with a felony, as a provision passed by the Republican-led House would do. He also opposed "penalizing the children of illegal immigrants" by denying them U.S. citizenship, an idea backed by some conservatives but not included in the legislation.

"My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad," the Florida governor wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times.

Kinda similar to when there's a long line at the bank and a couple more tellers open their window.

Yes. Are you aware of the HUGE backlog?

You got the point! And you expect this agency to handle another 20 million "guest workers"? Remember, there are at least 3.6 million visa overstays that these agencies have no idea where to find.

You have never answered my question. How many legal entries would you allow in?

"Most" you say - why wouldn't getting even 5% of illegals to do so LEGALLY necessarily REDUCE illegal immigration?

If you had 5% of the illegals become legal after the fact, it still wouldn't affect the numbers in the US. That is the game Congress is playing, just make them legal and the problem doesn't exist anymore. Of course, we still must deal with the reality on the ground and the continuing flow into the US. As I indicated, most of the illegals wold not qualify for legal immigration and they will continue to come in greater numbers as long as the jobs are there. You seem to believe that the illegal immigrant flow is fixed or stable and not increasing. The facts say otherwise. Pure sophistry.

Moreover, those who become legal can bring in family members legally, multiplying the impact. Based on census figures, the number of states in 1990, which had the largest number of foreign born residents coming from Mexico was 18. In 2000, the number increased to 30 states. In North Carolina, the number of Mexican-born residents increased from 8,751 in 1990 to 179,236 in 2000. What we really have is an invasion, which is spreading throughout the US.

As for whether the next Mexican President follows through on the Cancun commitments, we shall see.

It is in the best interests of Mexico to keep the flood of immigrants, legal and illegal, coming into the US. They have no incentive to change.

I always seek to not cloud the issues.

Oh, that's your best one yet. You take eight responses to your vanity trolling post to demonstrate that those opposed to illegal immigration are also actually opposed to legal immigration - but you seek to not cloud the issues?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, I needed a good laugh.

There are more than 8 or 9 just here on FR - nonetheless, 8 or 9 are 8 to 9 times more than "no one" : )

I didn't see that question. Answer: somewhere between 1 million and 1 billion per year.

Your math is as poor as your logic. What happens when you multiply something by zero?

And second, what are 8 posters compared to the 240,000 registered FR users? Your counts are irrelevant to the larger debate.

You can try spinning it all you want, but the bottom line is that America does deserve "the best of the best". Instead, we keep getting stuck with Bushes and Clintons.

And these idiots think we should vote for them and pay their taxes. Screw 'em and their Big Stupid Government.

I admit is it fuzzy math, but if there are 10 people in line at the bank, with 1 more person coming per minute, and 20 tellers open, what happens to the line?

Considering the fact that California and New York are completely under the thumbs of the democrats I don't think you really need to bother asking that question.

I suppose that depends on how long it takes to service each customer, I was never good at those, if a train is traveling 20mph headed north and another train is traveling 230mph headed south, what is the name of the bus driver kind of questions. But I'm not even going to worry about thinking about it, since I can't see how it has any bearing on this discussion.

"I respect freedom of conscience, but I find your gratuitous and aggressive advertising of an opinion guranteed to offend many posters here, to be extremely offensive. "

It's a tagline. If you consider having a tagline aggressive, then I don't know what to say.

But, anyone that needs to scurry off to Admin to try and clear Patriots out of the discussion, they aren't much of a person to begin with.

Amen. These folks don't want to debate, so much as they want to try to bait people and get them suspended or banned. It's their only option really.

Considering the fact that the democrats idea of who should be categorically prohibited from entering and the republicans idea of the same you haven't exactly narrowed it down.
