Mirecki hospitalized after beating

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the reported beating of a Kansas University professor who gained recent notoriety for his Internet tirades against Christian fundamentalists.

Kansas University religious studies professor Paul Mirecki reported he was beaten by two men about 6:40 a.m. today on a roadside in rural Douglas County. In a series of interviews late this afternoon, Mirecki said the men who beat him were making references to the controversy that has propelled him into the headlines in recent weeks. Mirecki

“I didn’t know them, but I’m sure they knew me,” he said.

Mirecki said he was driving to breakfast when he noticed the men tailgating him in a pickup truck.

“I just pulled over hoping they would pass, and then they pulled up real close behind,” he said. “They got out, and I made the mistake of getting out.”

He said the men beat him about the upper body with their fists, and he said he thinks they struck him with a metal object. He was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

“I’m mostly shaken up, and I got some bruises and sore spots,” he said.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Officials are classifying the case as an aggravated battery. They wouldn’t say exactly where the incident happened, citing the ongoing investigation

The sheriff’s department is looking for the suspects, described as two white males between ages 30 and 40, one wearing a red visor and wool gloves, and both wearing jeans. They were last seen in a large pickup truck.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 843-TIPS or the sheriff’s office at 841-0007.

Mirecki recently wrote online that he planned to teach intelligent design as mythology in an upcoming course. He wrote it would be a “nice slap” in the “big fat face” of fundamentalists.

The remarks caused an uproar, Mirecki apologized, and KU announced last week the class would be canceled.

Must have been Behe and Dembski dressed in Bubba.

Color me dubious but if he did get a beating the perps go to jail.

If we all had your talent for analyzing the contents of everyones, minds and souls, and determining how they would react under all circumstances and conditions, within mere seconds of reading only a few statements from them, some given tongue in cheek, we mere mortals could remain as aloof and analytical as yourself.

When you do behold that pale horse, I hope you don't discover that your infallable wisdom isn't as infallable as you believe it to be.

Yeah, I did, to the admin so they could look at it. It was a disgusting example of the worst stereotypes people have of conservatives. You should be (but aren't) ashamed.

(shrug)--They give no infinitesimal hoot about the poor schlub or the beating, if there was a beating. This is an opportunity for the left to try to throw the religious on the defensive--and try to get them chipped away from the GOP.

The agenda: try to alienate the GOP pol from the religious. Then alienate the religious from the GOP pol. GOP pol goes down in defeat (particularly if he's a vulnerable Repub, like, say--Santorum, maybe?) and the Dems get their victory--a majority DNC Senate.

It's about politics--and the internet. It's been going on since Compuserve days.

Split only a few votes off the GOP, and the Dems are back in power.

So, have you killed any abortionists, or are you the sort who's too cowardly to do your own dirty work?

What are you, Dan Rather?

If you're going to attempt to smear me by quoting a brief snippet of a mammoth post at the end of this thread so that people will react only to the snippet, at least quote the whole sentence:

I can't feel sorry for the guy, because even if it all happened exactly the way he said, including the vague "he thinks they struck him with a metal object" he's essentially OK, if a little shaken.

A fine prayer indeed, for a young man. In my case, old age beat him to it. I still have my memories though.

I really don't care about your 'because'. I am as skeptical as you are about the incident, and have said so. However, if it happened as he said it did, then it's appalling. This is not Iran; nobody deserves to be beaten by religious goons because somehow he's offended them.

This post has some interesting comments by Mirecki.
When told that some people were questioning the truth of his report, Mirecki fired back.

“The right wing wants blood, period. They’re not going to stop until they see blood. They’re not into anything else,” he said. “Whatever I do, whatever I say, they don’t believe anything because that’s the way they are... I know what happened. I got the hell beat out of me. They can say what they want.”
Methinks he doth protest too much.

"But, hey...I'm sure that if you'd been there when Jesus said "let he who is without sin cast the first stone," you'd have had that rock downrange in under a second."

This is a bit off topic, but since that is my tagline. . . we do need to finish the scripute.

It ends with Jesus picking the adulteress up, then saying, "Now go and sin no more."

It's forgiveness of sin. It's not a license to sin.

OK, so how many abortionists have you killed?

Is that really the issue PaleHorse OR is it that in polite society where everyone buries his/her head in the sand to keep out all unpleasantness, views like those I expressed above are unacceptible?

Just please, don't confuse Creationist with Christians.

Of course not, there are Moslem Creationists, even hired by the Kansas Conservatives.

Perhaps you should also tell the Creationists that evolution isn't atheism, either. Else your comments ring hollow.

"Perhaps you should also tell the Creationists that evolution isn't atheism, either. Else your comments ring hollow."

Oh, I do so tell them, generally when I state that I, an engineer and geologist and a Christian, and fully accept that God created the universe, its laws, and created man via evolution

I really don't care about your 'because'. I am as skeptical as you are about the incident, and have said so.

Actually, you are not. You are willing to entertain what he says at face value. I am not.

However, if it happened as he said it did, then it's appalling.

See? There you go again.

:)

The fact is, he's fine. I only care about the perpetrators. If he'd had some actual damage -- broken bones, trauma, abrasions, a boo boo -- I'd actually give him some thought. But the perpetrator(s) are all that matters. My ire is saved for them (him). No matter who they (he) are (is). Whether they are Mr. (Dr.) Smith or somebody else.
