I vaguely remember the reference to Australopithecus but I will have to go back and reread it.
"Lord of the Dance"?? I thought they came from Ireland. j/k. Where did you find that?
Here's one passage that has always made me very curious:
"The fallen judge and the singing card are of the same hand, but it is dangerous for the Arawaks to play it, because everyone would hear, including the cowboys "
Who would be "of the same hand" as PVDS. Does he mean someone who is a judge...but PVDS is a "fallen judge"...another "fallen judge", or another disgraced civil servant...Ben King?? I would like to hear you opinion of this passage.
I am going back to look at the Australopithecus passage and will post what I see later.

I saw that lord of the dance stuff somewhere today when researching Santeria and forgot about it until I saw those people dancing in C & C's. I realized that dancing is a major part of the rituals of some sects of Santeria and Yoruba...and that side of C & C fits the profile.
