It is funny.. The same people on this thread yell at Bush for increasing the size of the Government, yet they want the Government to "protect" our jobs.. That is calling for big Government if you ask me.. Can't have it both ways..

You can if you restore the original arrangement as it was from the beginning of USA. The magic word is tariffs - sales tax on imports.

One problem with this "solution" is that most tariffs are enormously expensive (to consumers) per job saved. We'd be much better off using tax revenue to pay the affected workers to stay home. At least then, the consumers would enjoy the benefits of lower-priced goods and the (former) workers would enjoy their leisure time.

That amendment was made when people hardly knew any economics.

Our understanding of tariffs has improved then. The best economic outcome is efficient allocation of resources, and tariffs, taxes --- any intererence -- creates distortions and makes outcomes suboptimal. Most importantly, there has never existed any government that could deduce the true cost of tariffs.
