Maybe the heat generated by decomposition?

Yup. I checked & the F-16's are rigged w/ infrared & sonar search capabilities. Another item that I ran across is that infrared picks up differences in heat absorption/ dissipation. (IIRC, from an article a week or so ago, this is newly installed equipment.)

Another article I read had some fascinating information about cadaver-sniffing dogs. A guy quoted in the article voiced his opinion that there were only about 5 really good cadaver-sniffing dogs in the US and that, in rare instances, cadaver dogs have found graves that were upwards of 100 years old!
